A practical chic handbag/purse
Free knitting pattern for a chic purse with a rosette button.
Finished size – approximately 25 cm high, and 28 cm wide, not including handle.
Materials: Very thick bulky yarn, you can use leftovers for this, approximately 8 ounces, or about 145 yards. 1 Pr. US size # 10 ½ needles.

Instructions:
Now you can use up that bulky yarn left over from that thick, cozy winter sweater!

Finished size – approximately 10 inches high, and 11 inches wide, not including handle.

Materials: Very thick bulky yarn, you can use leftovers for this, approximately 8 ounces, or about 145 yards. 1 Pr. US size # 10 ½ needles.

Gauge – 3 sts. = 1 inch, and 9 rows = 2 inches

Directions:
Starting at front section of purse, (bottom), cast on 30 sts.
Row 1- Knit across.
Row 2- Purl across.
Row 3- Increase in first st., knit across, and increase in last st. (32 sts)
Row 4- Purl across.
Rows 5 & 6 – Repeat rows 3 and 4. (34 sts.)
Now work in stockinette st., (knit 1 row, purl 1 row) until about 8½ inches from beginning of work, ending on the purl row.
Top: Work in * Knit 1, Purl 1 * ribbing, repeating between *’s across row, for 3 rows.
Bind off in ribbing pattern. Set aside.

Back Section and Flap:
Cast on, and work as above, to about 8 inches from beginning, omitting ribbing, and ending on a purl row.
Start flap pattern: First row: Knit 2, purl 1, knit across to last 3 sts., purl 1, knit 2.
Next row: Purl 1, knit 1, purl across to last 3 sts., knit 1, purl 2.
Repeat these last 2 rows 8 more times (10 rows).

Flap shaping: Knit 2, purl 1, knit 2 together, knit across to last 5 sts., knit 2 together, purl 1, knit 2.
Next row: Purl 2, knit 1, purl across to last 3 sts, knit 1, purl 2.
Repeat these last 2 rows until 12 sts. remain, ending on purl side.
Shape point of flap: Row 1 – Knit 2, purl 1, knit 2 together, knit 2, knit 2 together, purl 1, knit 2.
Row 2- Purl 2, knit 1, purl 4, knit 1, purl 2.
Row 3 – Knit 2, purl 1, knit 2 together twice, purl 1, knit 2 (8 sts.)
Row 4 – Purl 2, knit 1, purl 2 together, knit 1, purl 2.
Row 5 – Knit 2, knit 3 together, knit 2.
Last row – Purl 2 together, purl next st., now bind off one stitch by lifting the first stitch ) the first 2 that were knit together ) lift it up and over the second stitch to bind it off, purl 2 together and bind off last st.

Pin sides and bottom of purse together. Sew bottom and side seams.

Purse handle : Cast on 60 sts ( Note – this handle is about 20 inches long, if you want it longer cast on 3 sts for every inch you want to make it )
Knit each row for 3 rows. Bind off in knit stitch.

Sew purse handle to top sides of purse, each side.

Flap Loop – With a size J crochet hook, make a chain about 5 ½ inches long, ( or chain about 17 ). Fasten off, form into a loop and sew top back side point end of flap.

Rosette button – Cast on 36 sts. Knit 1 row.
Row 2- Knit 2 together across – 18 sts.
Row 3 – Repeat row 2 – 9 sts.
Row 4 – Knit 1, * Knit 2 together * repeating between *’s across row. 5 sts.

Cut yarn leaving a sewing length. Draw yarn length through remaining 5 sts. Coil knit piece around on inside to form a round rosette. Sew or tack in place.
Place Rosette button at bottom of bag. Fold down top flap to measure where to sew on Rosette. Sew Rosette button in place.
